Our goal is to reduce the frequency and severity of your migraines through a plan that actually fits your life. Migraines can be effectively managed, and a well-built plan can give you back many of your days.

Understanding Your Migraines

Migraines are more than bad headaches. They are a neurological condition that can cause throbbing pain, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, visual disturbances (aura), and cognitive difficulty. An episode can last anywhere from four hours to three days and can be completely disabling.

The first step at Avita MD is understanding your migraine pattern. We ask about frequency, duration, severity, associated symptoms, known triggers, family history, and what you have already tried. We also perform a neurological exam and, if indicated, order imaging to rule out other causes.

Acute Migraine Treatment

Acute treatments are designed to stop a migraine after it starts. The right medication depends on the severity of your episodes and how you respond to treatment. Options include:

  • Triptans: The most commonly prescribed acute migraine medications. They work by constricting blood vessels and blocking pain pathways. Available in oral, nasal, and injectable forms.
  • CGRP inhibitors: Medications that target the CGRP pathway involved in migraine. They are available in oral, injectable, and infusion forms and can be used for both acute relief and prevention. They do not cause the vasoconstriction associated with triptans, making them an option for patients with cardiovascular concerns.
  • Ditans: Lasmiditan works differently from triptans and can be used by patients who cannot take triptans due to heart-related contraindications.
  • Anti-nausea medications: For migraines accompanied by significant nausea or vomiting.

Preventive Migraine Treatment

If you have four or more migraine days per month, or if your migraines are severe enough to significantly affect your quality of life, preventive treatment can reduce how often they occur. Options include:

  • Daily oral medications: Beta-blockers, certain antidepressants, and anti-seizure medications have proven effectiveness in reducing migraine frequency.
  • CGRP inhibitors: Available in oral, injectable, and infusion forms that specifically target the migraine pathway. Injectable and infusion CGRP therapies are typically repeated every 2 to 3 months. These are generally well-tolerated and represent a significant advance in migraine prevention.
  • Botox injections: FDA-approved for chronic migraine (15 or more headache days per month). Treatments are administered as a series of small injections around the head and neck and are typically repeated every 2 to 3 months. Many patients see a meaningful reduction in migraine frequency after two or three treatment cycles.
  • Nutraceutical support: Evidence-backed supplements including magnesium, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and CoQ10 can support migraine prevention alongside medication and lifestyle changes.

Trigger Identification and Lifestyle Management

Medication is one part of migraine management. Identifying and managing your triggers can make a meaningful difference in how often migraines occur. Common triggers include:

  • Sleep disruption (too little, too much, or irregular sleep schedules)
  • Stress and letdown after periods of high stress
  • Hormonal fluctuations (menstrual cycle, perimenopause)
  • Certain foods and alcohol (aged cheese, processed meats, red wine)
  • Dehydration and skipped meals
  • Weather and barometric pressure changes

We work with you to identify your patterns and develop practical strategies. When hormonal triggers are suspected, we can evaluate your hormone levels with the DUTCH test as part of our women's health services.

When You Need a Neurologist

Most migraines can be managed effectively by your primary care provider. If your migraines are complex, do not respond to standard treatments, or require advanced evaluation, we coordinate referrals with neurologists at El Camino Health, Stanford, UCSF, and headache specialists in the area. We send your records, manage prior authorizations, and follow up on the consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Migraine Treatments

When should I see a doctor for migraines?

See a doctor if you get migraines more than four times a month, if your migraines are getting worse, if over-the-counter medications are not helping, or if your migraines are affecting your ability to work or go about your daily life. Avita MD can evaluate your migraine pattern and develop a treatment plan tailored to your triggers and symptoms.

What treatments does Avita MD offer for migraines?

Avita MD offers a full range of migraine treatments including acute medications (triptans, gepants, ditans), preventive medications (beta-blockers, anti-seizure medications, CGRP inhibitors), Botox injections for chronic migraines, trigger identification, lifestyle modification guidance, and referral coordination with neurologists when needed.

Can Botox help with migraines?

Yes. Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is FDA-approved for chronic migraine, defined as 15 or more headache days per month. At Avita MD, we administer Botox injections for qualified patients. Treatments are typically repeated every 2 to 3 months and can significantly reduce the number and severity of migraine days.

What are CGRP inhibitors and how are they given?

CGRP inhibitors are a class of migraine medication that targets calcitonin gene-related peptide, a protein involved in migraine attacks. At Avita MD, CGRP therapies are available in oral, injectable, and infusion forms, used for both acute and preventive treatment. Injectable and infusion CGRP therapies are typically repeated every 2 to 3 months.

Can supplements help prevent migraines?

Yes, certain nutraceuticals have evidence for migraine prevention. At Avita MD, we may recommend magnesium, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and CoQ10 as part of a preventive plan, often alongside medication and trigger management. We review your full health picture before recommending any supplement.

Can migraines be cured?

Migraines cannot be cured, and they can be effectively managed. At Avita MD, the goal is to reduce how often migraines occur and how severe they are, using a combination of acute and preventive medications, nutraceutical support, and trigger management tailored to you.

What causes migraines?

Migraines are a neurological condition with multiple contributing factors. Common triggers include hormonal changes, stress, sleep disruption, certain foods, alcohol, weather changes, and sensory stimulation. Avita MD helps you identify your specific triggers and develop strategies to reduce migraine frequency.

Do I need imaging for my migraines?

Not always. Your Avita MD provider will evaluate whether imaging (CT or MRI) is appropriate based on your symptoms, headache pattern, and neurological exam. Imaging is typically recommended if your headaches have changed suddenly, are accompanied by neurological symptoms, or have features that warrant further investigation.

Does insurance cover migraine treatment?

Most migraine treatments are covered by insurance, including office visits, medications, and Botox for chronic migraines (with documentation). Avita MD accepts Medicare, most major PPO plans, and HMO plans. We handle prior authorizations for medications and treatments that require them.
