Why Heart Health Monitoring Matters

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. The difficult part is that it often develops silently. High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and insulin resistance can progress for years without obvious symptoms. By the time chest pain, shortness of breath, or a cardiac event occurs, significant damage may already be done.

At Avita MD, we focus on identifying cardiovascular risk early, tracking it over time, and intervening before disease takes hold. This means going beyond a once-a-year blood pressure check and basic cholesterol panel.

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment

A thorough cardiovascular evaluation at Avita MD includes:

Blood Pressure Monitoring

Hypertension is the single most important modifiable risk factor for heart disease and stroke. We check your blood pressure at every visit and, if it is elevated, work with you on a management plan. For patients whose blood pressure readings vary, we may recommend home monitoring or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to get a more accurate picture.

Standard and Advanced Lipid Testing

A standard lipid panel measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. This is a reasonable starting point, yet it misses important details. Advanced lipid testing, which we offer through on-site blood draws, includes LDL particle number and size, lipoprotein(a), and apolipoprotein B. These markers provide a more accurate picture of your atherosclerotic risk and are especially important if your standard cholesterol looks normal and you have a family history of heart disease.

Inflammatory and Metabolic Markers

Inflammation plays a central role in the development of atherosclerosis. We test high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and homocysteine as part of a comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation. We also screen for insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, which significantly increase heart disease risk.

Genetic Risk Testing

For patients with a strong family history of heart disease or unexplained early cardiovascular risk, we offer genetic risk testing through 3x4 Genetics. Understanding your inherited risk helps us decide how aggressively to test and treat, and it shapes a prevention plan built around your specific biology rather than population averages.

On-Site EKG

An electrocardiogram (EKG) records your heart's electrical activity and can detect arrhythmias, signs of previous heart damage, and other abnormalities. Avita MD has EKG testing on-site at all three locations, so results are available during your visit.

Managing Heart Disease Risk Factors

If testing identifies elevated risk, we develop a management plan that may include:

  • Blood pressure medication with regular monitoring and dose adjustment
  • Statin therapy or other lipid-lowering medications when lifestyle changes alone are not enough, including Repatha, Vascepa, Pitavastatin, Lovaza, and bempedoic acid where appropriate
  • Blood sugar management for patients with pre-diabetes or diabetes
  • Dietary guidance focused on heart-healthy eating patterns
  • Exercise recommendations tailored to your fitness level and any limitations
  • Weight management support
  • Smoking cessation resources

We track your numbers over time, compare year-over-year trends, and adjust your plan as needed. If you are already taking medications for blood pressure or cholesterol, we review whether your current regimen is achieving the targets that are right for your risk level.

When You Need a Cardiologist

Many aspects of heart health can be managed effectively by your primary care provider. When specialist care is needed, whether for advanced imaging, cardiac catheterization, arrhythmia management, or surgical evaluation, we coordinate referrals with cardiologists at El Camino Health, Stanford, UCSF, and other practices in the area. We send records, manage prior authorizations, and stay involved in your care.

Schedule Your Heart Health Evaluation

Call Avita MD at (408) 495-5770 or book online. Same-day and next-day appointments are available. If you have not had a cardiovascular evaluation recently, or if you have risk factors you want to address, our providers will give you a clear picture of where you stand and what to do about it. For a broader assessment, consider our executive wellness exam or longevity medicine evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heart Health

What heart health services does Avita MD offer?

Avita MD provides cardiovascular risk assessment, blood pressure management, cholesterol management, advanced lipid testing, on-site EKG, diabetes and metabolic screening, lifestyle counseling, and referral coordination with cardiologists. We manage your heart health as part of comprehensive primary care.

Do you offer on-site EKG testing?

Yes. Avita MD has on-site EKG at all three locations in Los Altos, Mountain View, and Los Gatos. Your provider can order an EKG during your visit if you have symptoms like chest discomfort, palpitations, shortness of breath, or dizziness, or as part of a routine cardiovascular assessment.

What is an advanced lipid panel?

An advanced lipid panel goes beyond standard cholesterol testing. At Avita MD, we can test LDL particle number and size, lipoprotein(a), apolipoprotein B, and other markers that better predict cardiovascular risk. This is especially useful if you have a family history of heart disease or if standard cholesterol numbers look normal and you want a deeper picture.

How often should I have my heart checked?

Adults should have blood pressure and cholesterol checked at least every one to two years as part of routine care. More frequent monitoring is needed if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, a family history of heart disease, or other risk factors. Avita MD will set an appropriate screening schedule for you.

Can you refer me to a cardiologist if I need one?

Yes. Avita MD coordinates referrals with cardiologists at El Camino Health, Stanford, UCSF, and other cardiology practices in the Bay Area. We send your records, coordinate the referral, handle prior authorizations, and follow up on the results.

What lifestyle changes can reduce heart disease risk?

Regular physical activity, a heart-healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, getting adequate sleep, not smoking, and limiting alcohol all reduce cardiovascular risk. At Avita MD, we help you develop a realistic plan based on your specific risk factors and biomarkers.

What lipid-lowering medications does Avita MD prescribe?

When lifestyle changes are not enough, Avita MD prescribes lipid-lowering medications matched to your specific risk profile. Beyond statins, these include Repatha, Vascepa, Pitavastatin, Lovaza, and bempedoic acid. Your provider chooses the right option based on your advanced lipid results, your tolerance of other medications, and your overall cardiovascular risk.

Do you offer genetic testing for inherited heart disease risk?

Yes. Avita MD offers genetic risk testing through 3x4 Genetics for patients with a strong family history of heart disease or unexplained early cardiovascular risk. The results help us understand your inherited risk and personalize your prevention plan, including which testing and medications make the most sense for you.
